PhD Process in India: Pacific University

PhD degree testifies scholar’s knowledge and skills to research in a particular field. It requires extensive, thorough understanding and research of one’s majors. The program involves coursework, research, dissertation, and defense for which the average completion of time involves 5-6 years for full-time students whereas 6-7 years for part-time students. Many people in search of higher qualifying degree opt for PhD in any interested field in India and overseas. However, students prefer to study doctoral programs in foreign universities due to their polished and upgraded level of study and career opportunities. But the expenses abroad become a stumbling block for the people; hence they look for PhD universities in India only.

This could be one of the reasons why India has an increasing number of budding universities offering PhD programmes to increase the standard of the education in the country. Indian Universities Grants Commission has been set up to regulate and maintain the degree procession in all universities.  All the decisions and guidelines regarding higher education lie in the hand of UGC irrespective of the ownership of universities.  There are varieties of universities in India; central and state universities, state private universities and deemed universities which offers all the relevant courses from UG to PhD courses.

As per UGC guidelines, PhD degree is for a minimum duration of three years including course work and a maximum of six years. All universities admit PhD and M.Phil students through an entrance test conducted at the level of Individual University. However, terms and conditions for Ph.D. Entrance Test for those students who qualify UGC-NET (including JRF)/UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/SLET/GATE/teacher fellowship holder (UGC guidelines) or have passed M.Phil programme can be decided by universities solely.

Universities like Delhi University, Jawahar Lal Nehru University, and IGNOU remains the first and foremost choice of pursuing doctoral program all over the country, but there are other universities which are also making their way out to be a preferred choice of the students. One such university is Pacific University, Udaipur which is regarded number one private university in the region and second in state after Rajasthan University, Jaipur.

PhD course progression in Pacific University (PU)

Pacific Academy of Higher Education & Research University, better known as Pacific University was established in 1997. It offers PhD programmes in various academics- management, engineering, dental science, yoga, pharmacy, hotel management, fashion technology, commerce, science, social science, law, education, media and mass communication, social work, yoga and few more.

Eligibility and Admission

Indian universities involve three phases (stages) in which PhD functions- bachelor’s course, master’s course and doctoral programme (PhD itself).

55% marks in master’s degree are required as the minimum qualification to be eligible for the programme in PU. The university enrolls PhD candidates twice in a year, July and January, through a written entrance test followed by an interview. However, there are maximum 20 (for education and less than 12 for others) seats for the doctoral programme in relevant discipline. PhD is pursued only in regular mode and minimum three years are prescribed to complete it.

Allocation of supervisor

Once admitted to the programme, a supervisor is allocated to a student.  A supervisor shall not exceed 70 years at a time of his approval as a supervisor. He shall not have, more than following number of PhD scholars-

  • Professor – 8
  • Associate professor-7
  • Assistant professor-5

Supervisor acts as a mentor to guide scholar throughout his research and approving his progress made during the course. His approval and signature attests the research work and its progress.

Coursework

University prescribes coursework to students which must be completed within one or two first semesters of the program on credit basis to ensure the student is well prepared for thesis writing. Sessions are organized once every week in which students are guided on-

  • Scope of research
  • Ethics of research
  • Resources for research
  • Research tools
  • Research writing and skills

At the end of the first year of the course, students are directed to prepare a report covering entire topics covered during the coursework.

Coursework completion is followed by synopsis approval, evaluation, assessment, thesis preparation for which university has laid down set of rules and guidelines.

Few points to remember when opting for PhD in PU

  • It also demands fulfillment of residential requirement by the candidate duly signed by the superior.
  • ‘No dues certificate’ from Dean of the concerned faculty is required, where the research work was done.
  • Declaration done by the candidate regarding originality of the research work
  • Research papers published/ accepted by the candidate relevant to the research work reported in the thesis.
  • University also offers scholarships and fellowships to JRF/SRF/TRF/SC/ST/Minority scholars to support their research.
